We went up in the lift when I interviewed for The Tablet Sir Anthony Kenny, the former Master of Balliol, who has died aged 95.

We were in the Athenaeum, in which I had never set foot before, on the way to the smoking room, where in those days (2004) people were allowed by law to smoke.
