No sooner had the tearoom waitress opened the window than the trespasser flew in. More than twice the size of a wasp, the hornet helicoptered over the tables of tea and scones. Usually citizens of the south of England, hornets have begun spreading north. This was only the second I’d ever seen, and once again it was the insect’s size that amazed me. That and her strange beauty. Clearly a member of the wasp family, yet the trademark yellow and black was infused with a chestnut tinge, which in the late afternoon light bordered on orange.
