A hot day and the willows were casting a deep shade over the little mere. The water was shallow and warm, and covered in duckweed. Sitting on the bank among the reeds, I was waiting for a grass snake to swim across the green pool, something I’ve never seen before. Dragonflies scooted by, a brambling called from the willows, but no reptile slipped obligingly through the afternoon duckweed.
