I often wonder about the anonymous poets who named our birds and flowers and fish. Who was it that first coined goldfinch, harebell or miller’s thumb fish? The names of our fungi are often highly vivid too, especially the dangerously toxic ones. Take the destroying angel. Although this classic white mushroom looks like something you could easily bring home from the supermarket, it can indeed destroy you.
