If you go down in the woods today, you’re sure of loads of big surprises because we’re in the middle of the fungi season. Wandering through the oaks yesterday, it didn’t take me long to meet one of the stars of the show. Glowing a psychedelic purple, the amethyst deceiver rose from the beige leaf litter. A mushroom of both broadleaf and coniferous woodland, the amethyst deceiver gets its name from its vivid colour and a variability in appearance that can deceive the human eye into mistaking it for the similarly sized lilac fibrecap.
