We were walking beside the boating lake through glorious autumn sunshine when the sign took us by surprise. Welcome to Regent’s Park, it announced, “Home to the last breeding population of hedgehogs in central London”. All at once the sun went in, and I felt a shadow fall over us. Has it really come to this? In a city full of such vast wealth, technical resources and human talent, is there really no other home for these delightful, helpful, unobtrusive animals?
