It was the afternoon before the second lockdown began, and we’d gathered in the communal gardens to enjoy the sunshine and a last hour together. The grass was studded with colourful fungi. Three birches stood just behind our bench, and whenever a breeze blew through their scant fiery foliage, they seemed to whisper to each other.
