We’ve lived here for 20 years, yet there’s still something new waiting around each corner. The other day when I was pedalling down the switchback lane between Kilburn and Oldstead, I spotted an old wooden gate hidden deep in the hawthorn hedge. How had I never noticed it before? I’ve cycled this way a hundred times. Bike left leaning against the nearby milepost, I squeezed gingerly through the thorns and clambered over the gate. Finding myself at the foot of a grassy hill, I began to climb. Each steep step wafted up an invigorating, minty smell. I was walking through water mint.
