In the middle of the field, I found a daddy longlegs resting on a large white mushroom. It was a horse mushroom, much cherished by foragers; but what drew me, was the insect sprawled over the milky cap. Had it mistaken this substantial fungus for the moon? Daddy longlegs (also known as crane flies) fly on autumn nights. Searching for mates, they navigate by the moon. That’s why they fly in through open windows and bumble about our bathrooms and bedrooms – our electric lights confuse and draw them into our dazzling world.
