For a moment, I thought that it was a small child standing on the side of the dual carriageway. Close to a metre tall, head hunched into deep shoulders, it was only when we’d driven past that I realised this was a grey heron. Famed hunters of fish, frog and eels, I’ve often seen this species before, standing patiently by quiet waters, lonely estuaries, lakes, rivers and fens.
