Starlings have taken over our end of the village. The whole local population seems to be gathered in the gardens, hedgerows and sheep paddocks surrounding our house. There’s something profoundly life-affirming about the sight of foraging starlings. One moment they’re probing the lawn for leatherjacket grubs, the next they’re chasing flying ants and then they’re riding sheep, picking off ticks. And all the while, shouting and screaming.
