I was sitting working at the window of the York Theatre Royal cafe bar. The matinee crowd was gathering, but there was an even more dramatic event unfolding outside on the theatre patio. Every minute or so, a blackbird emerged cautiously from behind a shrub, rummaged for a few seconds in the soil around the loose paving stones, before bulleting into a bush.
