The dailies were friendly in their coverage of Archbishop Vincent Nichols’ impending creation as a cardinal. There is no reason why they shouldn’t be. The honour, as the archbishop pointed out, was “conferred upon the Catholic Church in England and Wales”, and, as he didn’t point out, it falls on an affable and popular figure. But every now and again there are shrieking outbursts of anti-Catholicism from the usual suspects, who will never be happy (if then) until every bishop is lined up with Tony Blair behind bullet-proof glass in an international court facing charges of crimes against humanity. Bonkers, I know, but they try it on regularly, like a desirable pair of Christian Louboutin shoes that still won’t fit no matter how many attempts are made.The
