The headline was the most bafflingly erroneous I have seen for many a long year

 

There was brisk traffic on Twitter this week for images of a sign that the Pope has stuck on the door of his room: No whining.

It was picked up by the English press with sympathy for Pope Francis’ attitude. The Daily Mail kindly gave the Italian original: Vietato lamentarsi, which I see as? a sort of thematic opposite of the Lasciate ogne speranza, “Abandon hope”, over the gates of hell in Dante’s Inferno.
