In the mid 1970s, the Australian philosopher Peter Singer popularised the rather inelegant term “speciesism”. He argued that discriminating against or exploiting animals by human beings, simply based on humankind’s assumed superiority, could be productively compared with racism and sexism. Anthony Gardner’s arresting novel All God’s Creatures takes the concept and imagines it as a new front line in our twenty-first-century culture wars.
