David suchet  has been best-known for years for his TV portrayal of Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot. This recording of him reading every word of the New International Version of the Bible is an entirely different sort of tour de force. It is also wonderful. Suchet’s voice, freed from the stiff disguise of Poirot’s accent, is melodic but strong. He reads in a measured way, always full of feeling. Knowing that after an agnostic upbringing the actor became a Christian aged 40 adds immeasurably to the experience of listening. He says that he has wanted to make this recording ever since his conversion; he carried it out between shooting scenes of his last ever Poirot mystery. Before I began listening, I knew the gospels about as well as most of us ill-informed
