The Great War didn’t look like war to a generation raised on Edwardian adventure stories, where soldiers rode horses and wore scarlet. The British Army had only switched to khaki battledress in 1900. Military technology so outpaced literature that words failed to comprehend mechanised warfare. Minds failed too.
