Why D.H. Lawrence? Why, of all the authors of his generation, does Lawrence interest other writers more than the rest? During his own lifetime, he was fictionalised in several novels, and after his death various acquaintances wrote books about their encounters. Since then he has been the subject of numerous biographies, as well as featuring in memoirs, films and plays. Last year saw the publication of two more novels inspired by Lawrence – Rachel Cusk’s Second Place and Alison MacLeod’s Tenderness – as well as Frances Wilson’s biography Burning Man.
