Amid the horrors of forced migration, unaccompanied child refugees are the most likely to be traumatised. They found collective representation in Little Amal, a 3.5-metre-high puppet taken on a year-long “odyssey” across Europe by an international team, starting from the Syrian-Turkish border. Amal (the name means hope in Arabic) celebrated her tenth birthday in Trafalgar Square on 24 October last, and next day was greeted by Cardinal Vincent Nichols in a liturgy of welcome. The Long Walk With Little Amal (Mountain Leopard Press, £20; Tablet price, £18) is a beautiful record by those who accompanied her.
