Last year, Dom Henry Wansbrough’s Revised New Jerusalem Bible was published to wide acclaim, a new translation incorporating “significant changes” and inclusive language (though it is not, as the introduction states, this century’s first new translation: Nicholas King SJ’s version was published in 2013). Two short and succinct “How the Bible Can Help Us Understand” study guides from Darton, Longman & Todd, the first in a series, celebrate its publication. Their writers trawl the Bible for relevant references and sift through them in the light of their own lived and prayed experience, not as theologians but as seekers along the way. There is no sense of their “knowing best” and they are clear and readable. Each book is divided into short chapters, with questions posed for group discussion as well as private prayer, concluding with a list of relevant cultural references: films, books, poetry, memoirs, interviews.
