Speed reading: Nick Spencer finds Sweden, Germany and France in dire straits


 

As Britain powers towards the iceberg, we might get a certain, morally suspect comfort from the fact that other countries are sailing in dangerous waters too.

Sweden has long been held to be a social democratic Utopia of equality and opportunity. Not so says Kajsa Norman, whose book Sweden’s Dark Soul (Hurst, £20; Tablet price £18) is a kind of “non-fiction Swedish noir”. Norman traces the country’s hidden hypocrisies through the story of a lifelong outsider and a mass sexual assault that was studiously ignored, exposing what she calls the nation’s oppressive “Unimind” in the process.
