This will be William Boyd’s fifteenth novel, not to mention five short-story collections and four plays – so, a safe pair of hands, you’d think. Boyd was born in Ghana; his family sent him to Scotland for his education, to Gordonstoun, where he “felt an outsider”. Perhaps that defined him.
