Where were you when the Berlin wall came down? Ian Kershaw knows where he was. Then a ­lecturer at the city’s Institute for Advanced Study, he was in a pub discussing a doctoral thesis with an American student, “oblivious to what was taking place a mile away”. Only when he returned home did he hear what had been going on. His wife had called from England and filled in their son on what she’d seen on the nine o’clock news.
