The Catholic novelist Antonia White became known for her party turn playing the Game of Truth. She played an extraordinary winning hand: “Within 10 years, I have had three marriages, two annulments and one certificate of virginity from the Pope.” There was no requirement to add that spouse number one was alcoholic and impotent; number two homosexual; or that it was the first annulment that invoked the physical examination (two doctors present) which pronounced White virgo intacta.
