“Herd instinct”; “group think”; “behaving like sheep”. The English language has a number of disparaging terms for collective action and behaviour. No wonder. Anglo-Saxon societies prize individual excellence over group achievement. We like winning teams, but reserve real adulation for the “star” burning bright and alone.

But are we as individualistic as we think?
