The White Rose group is one of the best-known German opponents of Nazism. Yet, while in Germany the group’s members have streets and squares named after them, elsewhere – despite books and a 2005 Oscar-nominated film – many have never heard of them.
Paul Shrimpton attempts to fill this unaccountable gap. To do so, he relies heavily on the letters and diaries of Hans and Sophie Scholl, the student siblings generally acknowledged as the leaders. These show, particularly in Sophie’s case, all the spiritual struggles of the mystic.
