The White Rose group is one of the best-known German opponents of Nazism. Yet, while in Germany the group’s members have streets and squares named after them, elsewhere – despite books and a 2005 Oscar-nominated film – many have never heard of them.

Paul Shrimpton attempts to fill this un­accountable gap. To do so, he relies heavily on the letters and diaries of Hans and Sophie Scholl, the student siblings generally acknow­ledged as the leaders. These show, particularly in Sophie’s case, all the spiritual struggles of the mystic.
