Those who have passed a certain age will recall the immense queues in major bookshops when the English version of the Jerusalem Bible – drawing heavily on the scholarship of the pioneering École Biblique – first went on sale, something over half a century ago. It has done us proud, and remains the version in use at Catholic Masses in these islands. This is a good time for Catholics and other Christians to get back to reading the Bible, and reading it intelligently.
