I was Muriel Spark’s publisher for 10 years, and so fell on this book with enthusiasm. Apart from her genius as a novelist, Spark was also a brilliant perpetrator of myth about herself. You either went along with the myth or you were cast into outer darkness – not a happy place to be, as she could summon up venom at the snap of a finger.
