Lough Neagh is not only the largest freshwater lake in Ireland. It is also the largest in these islands. It sits at the heart of Northern Ireland.
But in summer 2023 Lough Neagh was in trouble. The source of much of NI’s fresh water supply was blighted by blooms of blue-green algae at levels not seen for many decades. The lamentable state of the Lough was taken by many as an image of the situation in which NI finds itself.
