Pope Francis has recognised a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa, clearing the path for her to be made a saint. The canonisation is expected to take place in Rome on 4 September 2016.
Already, during her lifetime, because of her work for the poorest of the poor, Teresa of Calcutta was regarded as an icon of holiness. And most of us, during that time, thought we knew exactly what that meant. But, after her death, remarkable letters written to her spiritual directors were published, and the world and the church and the media - all of us - were forced to think again about what holiness might mean.
In one letter she wrote: “If I ever become a saint – I will surely be one of ‘darkness’.” And in another: “In my soul – I
