Van Gogh: A Ward in the Hospital at Arles (1889)

His Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear is one of the treasures of London’s Courtauld Gallery; and for the next few months Van Gogh’s paintings of the hospital ward where he was treated following the event are also on show there, as part of “Goya to Impressionism” (to 26 May).

The hospital paintings currently on show in London were collected by Oskar Reinhart (1885-1965), who was buying mostly Impressionist works for his home in Switzerland at the same time Samuel Courtauld was doing so for his home in London.
