In the preface to the text of Otherland, her new play about a trans woman, Chris Bush suggests that she hopes to position it somewhere between the Sheffield and Blair works – drawing on living there but also with an external perspective.

Sensing a need to set something against this celebration of acceptance, Bush confirms the extraordinary influence of Caryl Churchill’s Cloud Nine (1979), which daringly travelled between acts from the Victorian era to the year of the play’s premiere, though, in another confusion, with only 25 years having elapsed.
