The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Director: Michael Showalter
American televangelists Tammy Faye Bakker and her husband Jim may not be immediately familiar to UK audiences, except perhaps for the financial and sexual scandals of the late 1980s that led to them losing control over the international satellite television network, PTL (Praise the Lord), and Jim’s subsequent imprisonment for fraud. The Eyes of Tammy Faye is also very much an American story in its depiction of how eagerly religious belief can embrace glamour and money.
From the earliest days of their marriage, Jim (Andrew Garfield) was ambitious for them to have their own church. He tells Tammy (Jessica Chastain) that the shiny new car he’s just bought to take their ministry of a puppet show on the road is a gift from God. When she’s doubtful about going into debt, he assures her she just has to have faith.
