Guilt
BBC Scotland/BBC2
Guilt, The BBC’s new six-part drama (first episode on BBC Scotland, 24 October, and coming soon to BBC2) has a pleasingly simple premise around which a television dramatist can wind a number of complex knots and surprises.
One night, on their way back from a family wedding, two brothers are driving through a dark suburban street when they accidentally run over an old man – who is killed outright. In a panic, they attempt to cover up what’s happened. One of the brothers, Jake, is wracked with guilt about what they’ve done; the other, Max, is a coldly ruthless and ambitious lawyer who rationalises away any shred of remorse.
