Among the few uplifts in the current doom: Zoom. This conferencing technology, with its patchwork of chatting faces, turns out to be a smart medium for making new theatre during lockdown. A feature allowing documents to be unseen on screen while the participant speaks – intended for business presentations – also permits actors, each socially distanced in a square of screen, to give rehearsed readings without the script in view.
The Australian High Commission has enterprisingly used this technology to stream (until May 31) a new performance of Alan Seymour’s 1961 play, The One Day of the Year, with a cast of fine expat Antipodean actors based in London, including Kerry Fox and Mark Little, and stage directions read by novelist Kathy Lette.
