Pharus (Terique Jarrett) feels he may be gay but fears the reaction of his family, church and school, and classmates, especially David (Michael Ahomka-Lindsay), who is “on path to be a pastor”.

Theatre marketing departments and awards committees sometimes struggle over whether to define shows as a play with music or a musical. But Choir Boy belongs to a smaller third category: the play with music that is also crucially about music. Although written by an American, Tarell Alvin McCraney, Choir Boy was premiered in London at the Royal Court Theatre in 2012. After successful homecoming runs in New York, it is now back in the UK capital in a tweaked revival of a production seen at the Bristol Old Vic three years ago.
