On paper, the chances of the famously right-wing newspaper columnist Richard Littlejohn helming a feature about protest songs seemed about as plausible as Rowan Williams fronting an investigation into Aleister Crowley’s activities on Cefalù. But no, here the celebrated tabloid pundit was, in the first instalment of a two-part series (28 September), confessing to the ownership of no fewer than 12 Billy Bragg albums, wondering why it was that the Left had all the best tunes, interviewing a selection of bygone agitproppers, and keeping his finger on the sociopolitical button with great aplomb.

That said, there are substantial differences between a music documentary that goes out on BBC Radio 2 and its Radio 4 equivalent.
