The BBC announced last week that, as well as slashing spending across the board, it was somehow going to find £50 million a year for “bigger and bolder” new drama designed to compete with the output of the American networks and streaming services. It seems more unlikely than ever that it would find space for something like Channel 4’s This Is England franchise. And that is a pity. This Is England ’90, which started a four-part run this week (13 September), is the latest instalment in an occasional series that began with a feature film, This Is England in 2006. It is bold, in its way, but it could not be less “big”, and inhabits a totally ­different world to the glossy transatlantic miniseries. Writer/director Shane Meadows’ series featur
