A Sky documentary on Mother Teresa considers both the woman and her legacy in all its contradictions. Lucy Lethbridge surveys the three-part series

A question mark has mysteriously come and gone over Sky’s forthcoming three-part documentary on Mother Teresa (all episodes streaming from 9 May). On the preview, the subtitle reads “For the Love of God?”, which suggests that the programme was going to cast doubt on the relationship of Mother Teresa (inset) with God, or at least argue that her life’s work was actually for the love of something else. It isn’t quite such a hatchet job of a title as Christopher Hitchens’ 1994 polemic “Hell’s Angel”, but it conveys more than ambivalence.

However, now that the documentary is listed in the TV schedules, the question mark seems to have disappeared, making the title more truthful to what promises to be a thoughtful and even-handed look at this extraordinary woman and her influence. A wide range of people have been interviewed, followers, admirers (some reluctant) and critics.
