The apparently bottomless well of programmes about real-life con artists, scammers or frauds was ­further plumbed this week in The Dropout, which tells the extraordinary story of Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos, once worth billions and now exposed as a sham.

For those who have forgotten the details: Holmes, an 18-year-old dropout from Stanford University, set up Theranos in 2003, claiming to have invented a breakthrough system for blood-testing without injections, using machines that could be rolled out in every local pharmacy.
