A Wish for Afghanistan

It soon becomes apparent that the BBC’s chief international corres­pondent Lyse Doucet, host of this timely 10-part series of radio programmes and podcasts, has literally been there before. In fact, the preview of A Wish for Afghanistan (1 September-12 November, and on BBC Sounds) found her remembering another occasion on which she watched a major foreign power hastily pack up and leave Kabul. That was early 1989 and the departing soldiers being monitored by the then 30-year-old reporter were Russians from the disintegrating Soviet Union.
