I had to gird myself to watch The Me You Can’t See, the new series on mental health produced by Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry (inset). It was the thought of Prince Harry laying bare his suffering in front of millions, yet again. The first episode is called “Say it Out Loud” and Harry – now speaking fluent therapese and doing those hand gestures that indicate sincerity – was certainly not keeping it buttoned up. Take Rashad, who was a successful award-winning chef who had a major breakdown. He’d suffered acute anxiety and depression since childhood when his father was sent to prison. After his breakdown, he lost his job and his flat and is only now, with the help of therapy he struggles to afford, beginning to work again. He talked movingly about the problem for many young black men of fearing they’ll be seen as weak if they admit depression, sadness and struggle.
