Saving Britain’s Pubs with Tom Kerridge
BBC2
When this four-part series began filming, the British pub was endangered (14,000 have closed since 2000): but a year later the pandemic has shifted things a lot further. Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge, who has form in saving small businesses, was sent in last November to help three struggling publicans. Episode one (12 November) meant gritted teeth for the viewer, who could see last winter’s optimistic outlays on refurbishment would soon come up against impending financial catastrophe.
In rural Cornwall, Amy and Ian (inset) of the White Hart work all hours and Tom suggested they might knock down a supporting wall to make the most of their lovely view over the Tamar Valley, to turn them into “a destination pub”. Cautious Ian, who also works as a gas engineer, wasn’t so sure but multitasking human dynamo Amy makes all the decisions and she went for it.
