Outdoor shows, the first form of theatre allowed back after lockdown, seemed set to decline due to a combination of winter and the gradual return of socially distanced indoor shows.

With government rhetoric suggesting the possibility of more severe restrictions – last week’s first tightenings have already removed bar service at indoor performances – al fresco entertainment may be required to do further service this year. Although even C-o-n-t-a-c-t, an enterprising promenade play performed on the streets of London, now, under latest guidelines, has to insist on spectators (because there are more than six) wearing face coverings, even though the whole show takes place in the previously safe open air.
