Weans’ World
BBC Radio 4
A native of Shettleston in Glasgow’s East End, the journalist, Audrey Gillan, had the bright idea of returning there over four decades later to see what the young people were up to. The very young people, that is – for her guides in this entertaining documentary (2 June) were neither teachers, social workers nor other interested parties but pre-teens.
There was no sign of any foul-mouthed, misanthropic delinquents in Weans’ World (for those of you unfamiliar with the patois, “wean”, pronounced “wane”, is a truncation of “wee one”). Instead we were introduced to such radio naturals as 11-year-old wannabe thespian Jayden, eight-year-old Holly and her seven-year-old brother, John, and 11-year-old Alicja.
