Moving On
BBC1
Each night this week the BBC has run a short standalone drama from the anthology series, Moving On, created by Jimmy McGovern, which began in 2009 and is now in its eleventh series. Although he no longer writes the dramas, they represent vintage McGovern: stories of quiet lives interrupted by change or shifts of gear. These are tales that start with character, born from a close observation of how people are and how they behave in the emotional struggles that make ordinary existences extraordinary.
Moving On made me come over all nostalgic for the days when this was what British soap operas were also concerned with – before they started taking inspiration for their plotlines from headlines in the National Enquirer.
