David Runciman is professor of politics at the University of Cambridge. His weekly podcast, Talking Politics, recorded on a Wednesday and available each Thursday morning, via the usual apps and devices, has a determinedly informal air. The guests tend to be fellow academics and the general effect is of a gang of cronies convivially gathered if not in a college dining hall then around a kitchen table somewhere in Trumpington.

Conceived in the spring of 2016, and now well beyond its 200th instalment, the series recently stirred a social media debate over the related questions: do Runciman and his colleagues have boring voices, and, if so, is this a good thing?
