Marriage Story

Noah Baumbach has succeeded John Updike as the bard of American divorce. He dramatised his parents’ separation in his great 2005 movie, The Squid and The Whale, and now draws on his own experience in the field (he was married to Jennifer Jason Leigh) for Marriage Story. It’s a comedy, but floated upon such dangerous currents of acrimony and mortification it’s hard not to feel queasy. Accompany a loved one to this movie at your peril. 

It begins in the stunned aftermath of a breakdown. Charlie (Adam Driver), a New York theatre director, has been married for 10 years to Nicole (Scarlett Johansson), a former teen film star, now leading lady of Charlie’s theatre troupe.
