Of the many sobering testimonies in the first tranche (19 May) of this two-parter on religious persecution in Iraq, the most sobering came from a man who had returned to his village near Kirkuk on the day in 2017 that Isis was officially defeated. In that night’s assault one of his brothers was shot dead and another gravely injured. Since that time, with the government forces charged with defending the region disbanded, there have been another dozen bomb attacks. “If you were Muslim,” someone from a neighbouring village helpfully explained, “this wouldn’t be happening.”
