Years and Years
BBC1
Dramatist Russell T. Davies is accustomed to time travel. Having reanimated the tired daleks of Dr Who and created a cult classic for all age groups, he now turns his pen to us: we British, at this very moment in 2019. We are represented by a handful of mostly ordinary inhabitants, mostly related, living in a nameless northern city in the years from 2019; and Davies then rolls them into the near future.
At first all is fretful, uneasy and uncertain. It seems that we are living at the beginning of the end times – no one fully understands what’s going on what with Trump, Brexit, China, plastic and capitalism and, generally, everything, but everyone agrees that we’re in trouble. Where to start with what’s wrong? As well-meaning local housing officer Daniel puts it: “Companies, banks, the corporations, the brands… and don’t get me started on Isis.”
